Tremendous late 1800s portrait of boxer John L. Sullivan in this original, from-the-camera, one of a kind glass plate negative. The 6.25x8.25" plate has a 1885 copyright by John Wood of New York right near Sullivan's boot, though the negative is likely from the 1890s. Sullivan is considered the last Heavyweight Champion of the bare-knuckle era and the first of the gloved era, securing his place in boxing immortality. Though it's over a century and a quarter old, great images can be generated from this negative today thanks to another gift from the extensive Brown Brothers archive.
