The 1972–73 New England Whalers were a first year team that was competitive from the start, placing first in the Eastern Division to qualify for the playoffs and then won three playoff series to become the first winner of the Avco World Trophy. Offered is the team trophy that once lived in the team offices for many years.
Handsome silver plated cup sits on top a wooden base and features the names of each player etched into the front including Ted Green, Al Smith, Rick Ley, Brad Selwood, Larry Pleau, Paul Hurley, Terry Caffery, Tom Webster, Tom Williams, Jim Dorey, John French, John Danby, Brit Selby, Mike Byers, Kevin Ahearn, Time Sheeny, John Cunniff, Guy Smith, Rick Jordan, Tom Earl, Bruce Landon, Robert Schmertz, Howard Baldwin, Jack Kelley, Ron Ryan, Joe Altott and Skip Cunningham. Below the cup on the base is a plaque that reads, "New England Whalers Hockey Club - Eastern Division Champions - Premier Season of The World Hockey Association - 1972-1973."
Measures in at 24" tall; presents in EX condition overall with some tarnishing noticed.
