Amazing history in this 1895-96 team photo of the inaugural Vassar Colllege women's basketball team, one of the first ever assembled. Players are shown clad in the long-sleeves and skirt uniform style of the era, with a 96 across the chest. 96 Basketball Team V.C. is written in ink at the bottom edge and each player has a number written on her likeness, all in steel-tip fountain pen. Photograph measures 7.25x9.5" on heavy board stock board mount. Verso has written identification of each person with corresponding number, with inscription "Basket Ball team Vassar College 1895 & 1896. This class introduced and first played the game at Vassar in 1895." Stunning example of both sports history and the emerging struggle for women's equality.
