The man responsible for Mickey mantle becoming a switch-hitter was his own father, Elven "Mutt" Mantle, who appears in this rare panoramic shot snapped during his days as a coal miner. Measuring 7" x 19.5", the image is a classic one depicting the American experience during the 1930s. The self-designated "night crew" of the Davis "Big Chief" Goodwin mine posed for the shot on July 31, 1935. Included in the lot is a signed 1962 official American League (Cronin) baseball, both of which come directly from one of "The Mick's" neighbors. The ball has some clubhouse signatures, including Roger Maris. Ralph Hoak signature is traced over.  When Mickey reportedly complained to his dad that he didn't feel he could make it during his early years as a pro baseball player, "Mutt" offered that he could join his dad at this very job. A true testimony to the fact that perseverance pays off.
