In 1894, Hall of Fame outfielder Sam Duffy of the Boston Beaneaters established a Major League record by compiling a .440 batting average. Here's a typed document on Red Sox letterhead to autograph collector Robert Shaw some 39 years after Duffy retired, along with his 8/10 autograph in black ink. There is one mail fold but otherwise rates EX. After an outstanding 17-year playing career, Duffy managed in the big leagues from 1901-22.
