Splendid 1959 original artwork by Willard Mullin of Pittsburgh Pirates pitchers Harvey Haddix and Elroy Face commemorating Haddix's 12 inning perfect game and Face's relief brilliance. The Haddix game occurred on May 26, 1959. In the game, Haddix pitched 12 perfect innings only to lose the game in the bottom of the 13th. The inning started with Felix Mantilla reaching base on a Don Hoak error. A sacrifice bunt by Eddie Mathews was next, followed by an intentional walk to Hank Aaron. Joe Adcock then hit what appeared to be a walk off homer but Aaron thought the ball had simply gone off the wall. Aaron proceeded to cut across the diamond into the Braves dugout. Adcock then passed Aaron on the base paths rendering them both out. However, Mantilla crossed home plate before the base running gaffe so his run counted leaving the Pirates a 1 run loser. Mullin is famous for working as a Sporting News illustrator as well as creating the iconic "Brooklyn Bum" mascot. The artwork measures 23" in height and 15" wide. The piece has some pencil notations. Overall, it is in very good condition.

These select pieces were saved by one of the original owners of The Sporting News Original Art Archives. Coming directly from The Sporting News, they were purchased at auction in the 1990s. These represent some of the better images by the finest artists including Willard Mullin, Karl Hubenthal, Leo O’Melia and the unsung hero, Lou Darvas.
