Impressive 1962 original artwork by Ray Gallo of stolen base champ Luis Aparicio and his two 1962 base stealing rivals Jake Wood and Dick Howser. Gallo is famous for working as the Sporting News' illustrator as well as creating the comic strips "Cotton Woods" and Ozark Ike". He also was the man who created the classic NY Mets skyline logo. The artwork measures 19" in height and 16" wide. The piece has some pencil notations and a #279 written on the top border in red ink. Overall, it is in very good condition.
These select pieces were saved by one of the original owners of The Sporting News Original Art Archives. Coming directly from The Sporting News, they were purchased at auction in the 1990s. These represent some of the better images by the finest artists including Willard Mullin, Karl Hubenthal, Leo O’Melia and the unsung hero, Lou Darvas.
