Interestingly, it is not far from the final product as the first line reads, "The backdoor (crossed out with question mark above) gunner is returnin' home like some high school runaway." The crossed out word would ultimately become "ragamuffin" and the "high school" runaway transitioned to "hungry." Even the doodle in the margin is fascinating, perhaps representing a black hole, the frustration of writer's block. Most of the important lines are here; "...dressed in drag for homicide..." and "... nuns run scolding through Vatican halls pregnant..." and of course, "drinking unholy blood." A wonderful introspection into the creative mind of one of the great artists of the era. Written in black ballpoint ink on an 8.5x11" page torn from a spiral notebook.
