Beginning in 1930 and through 1954, Dixie Brand ice cream cups were distributed with lids containing pictures of popular themes of the day. In the early years, the pictures were of circus performers and animals, but starting in 1933 and every year through 1954, Dixie issued a set of movie star pictures on their lids. In conjunction with the lids, Dixie also had a premium program where 12 Dixie Lids could be traded for one large picture of a chosen movie star. These large premiums were usually 8 x 10 inches, in full color, and contained pre-punched holes for placing in a binder. Though movie star lids were the main lids put out by Dixie, the company also issued some baseball player lid sets, as well as some wartime sets during the WW2 years. Lids can be found for many different companies, resulting in thousands of variations. It would probably be impossible for anybody to assemble a complete collection of lids and collectibles with all ice cream maker variations – but here’s a good start: - set of 25 war-related lids, high quality, hand cut; - 7 partial uncut sheets (varying sizes) of movie star lids (lite discoloration, some creases); - 2 small partial uncut sheets of baseball players (1953); - 8 different copies of ‘My Picture Book of Stars’, issued between 1943 and 1951 (each about EX); - Dixie Cup ‘Starviewer’ kit, intact and unperforated; - set of 24 Dixie Nature Series – dogs, birds, fish, butterflies, paintings by Dan Smith (EX-MT); - complete Dixie Circus kit, cutouts of circus animals and entertainers, 42 cameos of various circus animals (some duplication), with original mailing envelope (EX to MT); - 11 Dixie Jig-Saw puzzles (approx. 125 pieces each) with 6 in original mailing envelopes, NM - 2 advertising display cards (approx. 6 x 14” each) for Dixie Ice Cream (EX to EX-MT). An awesome collection showing the diversity and reach of Dixie Brands thru the 1950’s!
