Major League jerseys from this era are so scarce and this treasure is all original. Especially notable is the fact that this was the very first year the Senators used numbers as part of their uniforms. Second baseman Jackie Hayes was in his fifth and final year with the club when he donned this #22 road gray wool top. After his departure to the White Sox, none other than Hall of Famer Sam Rice took the number 22, making us wonder if the right fielder wore this exact jersey. We will probably never know with any certainty. There's a "W" sewn on both sleeves with "Hayes" sewn in the collar in red, next to a Spalding tag. The "22" sewn on the back is black felt. At the middle of the tail on the back is a slit used for tying the back of the jersey to the pants or waist, preventing it from coming untucked. Shows use but is in fine condition with no rips, tears or holes. There's some very slight staining and red color that bled from an undergarment at the armpit areas. The career .265 hitter was most renowned for becoming the very first Major Leaguer to wear a batting helmet during a game.
