Jim Thorpe is widely considered to be one the most versatile athletes of all time. He won two Olympic gold medals (in 1912 for the pentathlon and decathlon), and played professional football, baseball, and basketball. This original, vintage photo was discovered in the Carlisle, PA, area and is believed to be only the second of its kind; the only other known specimen resides in the Cumberland County Historical Society. It was likely presented only to team members and coaches. It features Thorpe and Lewis Tewanima, another Olympic runner of the time, with the Carlisle Indian School track team in 1911. The mise-en-scene belays the social injustice at play, as the team stands somberly in front of a curtain background. 9"x7".
