After being known for a decade as the Highlanders, the most storied franchise in sports history adopted its famous nickname in 1913, and this was the very first team photo under the name Yankees. Sharing the Polo Grounds for home games with the New York Giants baseball team, the Yanks endured a miserable 57-94 season that landed them in seventh place, but better times were indeed ahead. This photo is labeled as Type I by PSA and also encapsulated. It is in great condition considering its age and how fragile these early photos are. Small chips are evident at the upper-left and lower-right corners, but those only affect the white border and not the photo itself. Adding to the allure and value of this, the photo was taken by the Paul Thompson agency and has the stamp on the back. There is also a Sporting News hologram on the back, along with notations identifying the team as the NY Yankees 1913. The media was partially responsible for the name change as they believed "Highlanders" didn't fit after the club moved from a hilltop to the base of Coogan's Bluff, adjacent to the Harlem River.
