Racing shoe from the most celebrated match race in British Thoroughbred history. The Flying Dutchman raced for four seasons, from 1848-1851. The Flying Dutchman had only lost one race; that when when he raced Voltigeur and The Flying Dutchman's jockey, rumored to have been drinking, set too fast a pace. In the rematch, before an estimated 100,000 spectators on May 13, 1851, in York, England, The Flying Dutchman won the two-mile race for a purse of 1,000 sovereigns and then retired to stud. The horseshoe is beautifully matted and framed with accompanying historical data and a print of the race (6.5x10"). The attractive inlay of the horseshoe reads, "Flying Dutchman Winner of the Great Match May 13, 1851." The racing shoe is 4.5" in length and the shoe, the print, and the accompanying historical information is beautifully matted and framed at 23x28".
