Racing shoe from the most celebrated match race in British Thoroughbred history. The Flying Dutchman raced for four seasons, from 1848-1851. The Flying Dutchman had only lost one race; that when when he raced Voltigeur and The Flying Dutchman's jockey, rumored to have been drinking, set too fast a pace. In the rematch, before an estimated 100,000 spectators on May 13, 1851, in York, England, The Flying Dutchman won the two-mile race for a purse of 1,000 sovereigns and then retired to stud. The horseshoe is beautifully matted and framed with accompanying historical data and a print of the race (6.5x10").
