November 14, 1961, "Camelot" document signed by John F. Kennedy. Large header atop document "John F. Kennedy, President of the United States of America." Document appoints Alan Jay Lerner as a Member of the Advisory Committee on the Arts (National Cultural Center). Alan Jay Lerner, along with Frederick Loewe, created the musical "Camelot." In 1963 Jacqueline Kennedy was interviewed for LIFE, and she said, "Don't let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment, that was known as Camelot." She said it was one of JFK's favorite lyrics from the musical. She also stated, "There'll be great Presidents again, but there'll never be another Camelot again." John F. Kennedy's years as President thus became known as the "Camelot years," a romanticized version of the Presidency and the Kennedy family, friends and followers that came to a tragic end with President Kennedy's assassination in November 22, 1963.
