Known variously as the Mercury Seven, the Original Seven, and Astronaut Group 1, these astronauts were: Alan Shepard, John Glenn, Virgil "Gus" Grisson, Walter Schirra, Leroy Cooper, Don Slayton, and Malcolm "Scott" Carpenter. Later discovered in NASA file and sent. Received 2/15/64 or later. The Mercury Seven began on April 9, 1959, and they flew all manned United States spacecraft from May 1961 to May 1963. In addition, members of the Mercury Seven flew on all of the Nasa crewed orbital flights of the 20th. Century. Tragically, Gus Grissom died in the Apollo 1 fire, and thus his autograph remains rare. Alan Shepard was the first American in space, and John Glenn, who flew U.S. Marine missions in the Korean with baseball Hall of Famer Ted Williams, was the first American in orbit. Later, Glenn became a U.S. Senator and was the oldest American in space when he flew on board the Shuttle in 1998. Glenn was the last remaining Mercury Seven member when he died at 95 in 2016.
