According to Burdick, from 1892 to 1902 the ATC had a market fight with the British tobacco companies and used trading cards as a tool, issuing many sets for export. It is believed that the few cards bearing the Old Judge and Dog’s Head advertising were part of that effort. Jack Thompson was a Kiwi (New Zealander) who has two reported bouts and was a second to fighter Larry Foley, who also has a card in this issue. The card has a light image but clear back, and is rare in any condition.
