This halter was worn by Hennessy, a 2-year-old colt in 1995 who won four of nine starts, including the prestigious Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga, with two additional second-place finishes. Later during his international stallion career, he produced Johannesburg, the unbeaten 2-year-old champion of 2001 and notable stallion in his own right. Hennessy is also the grand-sire of Scat Daddy, and tail-male great-grandsire of 2018 undefeated Triple Crown winner Justify. Hennessy raced for popular owners Bob and Beverly Lewis and was trained by Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas. The Lewises were known throughout the racing industry for their graciousness -- in victory and defeat. Together, they raced approximately 50 stakes winners, including Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winners Silver Charm and Charismatic, who both narrowly missed Triple Crown titles in 1997 and 1999, respectively. The Hennessy Halter emanates directly from the personal collection of the Lewis estate and bears an engraved brass nameplate featuring Hennessy’s name and the everyday wear one would expect from a breeding operation. The auction will benefit the Racetrack Chaplaincy of America as per the wishes of the Lewis family.
