Nat Fein's photo of "The Babe Bows Out" is one of baseball's - and all of sports, for that matter - most iconic images. It offers a view with two unique perspectives; that of the Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, and that of Babe Ruth himself - Yankee Stadium, with its empty field, cherished memories, adulatory fans, and baseline of teammates. Fein positioned himself behind the venerable slugger, not only to capture Ruth’s #3, as it was the retirement of that number that brought this audience together, but also to avoid Ruth's sick and broken facade. Image has great contrast making the Ruth portion of the photograph really pop. Notice how Ruth is using the baseball bat, borrowed, at random, from Bob Feller from the Cleveland dugout moments before, as a cane to support himself. Ruth would die two months later. This glorious photograph, like the legend, lives on, and is both a true treasure and proper remembrance. This photograph was the first sports photo to win the Pulitzer Prize.
