The jersey of a very patriotic Henry 'Hank" Gowdy. He played in the National League as a catcher and first baseman for the Boston Braves and the New York Giants. He was a member of the 1914 Miracle Braves. He was the first active Major Leaguer to enlist in the service during World War I and in World War II he enlisted again at the age of 53. After leaving the service after WW II, Gowdy resumed his baseball career in 1946 as a coach with the Cincinnati Reds. He even managed the team for four games that season, having a 3-1 record for the sixth place team. Gowdy retired from baseball after that season. The jersey has "Cincinnati" in red letters across the chest. Gowdy's number, "3" is on the back. Tag on neck reads, "Size 44." Smaller tag on neck reads, "Gowdy 3." Also, an unattached "Health" patch, an approximately 3x3.5" red, white, and blue patriotic patch issued during World War II. Nice evidence of use with sweat stains, particularly around neck and what appear to be a few dirt stains. Overall condition is very good.
