Extraordinary sports treasure, featuring golf's Bobby Jones, with cross-celebrity appeal from baseball legend Ty Cobb and sportswriting icon Grantland Rice, along with 1928 U.S. Open winner Johnny Farrell. Framed and matted photo, and signatures, measuring 19x20" overall. Photo is from the original negative, but is a more modern print. Bobby Jones and Ty Cobb were both born in Georgia, and both reached excellence early, with Jones winning the U.S. Open at age 21, and Hall of Famer Cobb winning his first batting title at age 20. Jones first met Cobb in 1919, and then began his lifelong friendship with Cobb when Jones used to attend spring training of Cobb's Detroit Tigers, particularly when the Tigers trained in Augusta, Georgia. After baseball seasons, Jones and Cobb would play golf together. The photo was taken at Augusta National Golf Course, home of  the Masters, which Jones helped design and for which Jones and Rice were founders. Think of the enormous talent of the men in this photo. In 1930, Bobby Jones won all for majors in the same calendar year, and then he retired and became a renowned golf course designer. Cobb won an amazing 12 batting titles in a span of 13 years and hit over .400 twice. Grantland Rice's writing created the fame of Notre Dame's Four Horseman, and Rice also originated the oft-quoted dictum, "(It's) not that you won or lost, but how you played the game." Not to say that any of these men accepted losing. Rice once said, "Ty Cobb is the most competitive athlete I have ever known and Bobby Jones is not far behind." Each of the four gents pictured in the photo is represented with his autographs below. The signatures are on album pages or business sized cards. All are in ink.
