Exceptional example of Negro League Baseball Broadside. Also, advertises that "Jesse Owns... World's Fastest Human Will Toss the First Ball." The poster promotes a May 10, 1942, game between the Philadelphia Daises (sic) and the Baltimore Grays at Old Hildale (sic) Park. The poster does not give a year, but the "Buy Victory Bonds" message on the bottom of the poster indicates that this was a World War II era poster because that is when Victory Bonds were sold, and calendar dating shows the Sunday game to be 1942. This is not the Hilldale Daisy team of classic Negro National League lore. Rather, it is most likely a semi-pro club from Darby, Pennsylvania that took up the Hilldales' name after they disbanded in 1932. The Baltimore Grays team cannot be identified. Jesse Owens won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games, held in Berlin, Germany. Owens superb performance was a wonderful victory over Hitler's propaganda machine and its promotion of Aryan supremacy. After his Olympic triumph, Owens had difficulty overcoming the racism of his day and struggled to find lasting employment. For years he made appearances at ballparks and racetracks, sometimes racing against men who were given head-starts, or even running against horses. This is a meaningful historical example of the situation that African-Americans faced, particularly in baseball before Jackie Robinson broke the modern Majoe League "color-line" in 1947. The broadside has a stain and tape repair in the upper right corner. There are a few small corner chips as well as a few edge tears. While the perimeter of the poster does show wear, the bulk of the poster is in good condition. The vintage broadside measures 16x25.5", framed at 24x33.5".
