Wonderful window into inside baseball. Fascinating find. A professional scout's notebook, name unknown. Contains detailed scouting reports on both college and professional teams from the late 1950s. There are 50+ pages of scouting info, each page 5.5x8.5". A two-page report covers the Miami Marlins team in the Triple A International League in 1958. Incredibly, one of the possible "prospects" evaluated was Hall of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige. Paige is listed as being 49 years old, although Pro-Baseball reference lists Paige as being 51 years old at that time. Paige's report notes, "FB (fastball) alive. Throws 3/4 (arm angle), Slider, and changes off fastball." There is a column labeled "Pr." (prospect). Most players have "No" in the prospect column. Paige's column has been left blank. Well, is a 51-year-old man who pitched his best years in the Negro Leagues decades before still a prospect? Paige actually went 10-10 with Miami that season, and he had a 2.95 ERA. His WHIP was .991, the lowest on the team. Not too shabby. Former and future Major League pitchers also on that squad included Dallas Green, Warren Hacker, Windy McCall, and Mickey McDermott. When the scout evaluated the Brooklyn Dodgers' Montreal Royals farm club, he listed 1955 World Series hero Sandy Amoros as a prospect as a utility man, which Amoros was when he returned to the Majors. From that same team, future Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda, who pitched briefly for the Dodgers, was termed a non-prospect. The scout was also correct in evaluating Montreal's second baseman George "Sparky" Anderson. The scout said the future Hall of Fame skipper, "Bunts. Does nothing outstanding except hustle."
