Rare Black Panther poster. Bobby Seale and Bobby Hutton were the first two members of the Black Panther Party. Inspired by activist Malcolm X, who was assassinated in 1965, they adopted Malcolm X's slogan, "Freedom by any means necessary." On August 19, 1969, Seale, the Chairman of the Black Panthers, was leaving the wedding of Black Panther Ray "Masai" Hewitt when Seale was surrounded by several unmarked cars. In the cars were law officers who arrested Seale, and he was taken to the San Francisco City Jail. He was charged with initiating the riots that took place during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. He was one of the members of the "Chicago Eight" who were on trial for actions against the convention. After protesting numerous times during the trail, Seale was bound and gagged. Later, he was sent to prison for four years, charged with 16 counts of contempt of court. This poster, with the large black-lettered accusation stating "Kidnapped" as the only word (not counting fine print) visible on the poster, was produced by the Black Panther Defense Fund and was an implied invitation to contribute to the fund. The poster is 23x25". On archival board and then linen, it measures 28.5x30.5". Excellent condition. This poster an important historical find from a contentious time in American history.
