His strength, stamina, and cat-like quickness catapulted The Boilermaker to the pinnacle of the boxing world during the sport's first golden era. He became Heavyweight Champion in 1899 and defended the title nine times, besting the likes of Bob Fitzsimmons, Bob Sharkey, and James J. Corbett. Jeffries' intense training regimen produced one the great physiques of the day, earning him monikers like the "Prince of Physical Manhood" and the "Perfect Specimen." Nothing illustrates this point better than the image on offer here. "No. 4 Jeffries Muscular Development" in pencil on mat below image. Photographer appears to be "Manston." "James J. Jeffries, Champion Heavy Weight Pug of the World" in vintage pencil on verso of the mat. Double-matted and framed 17.75x14.75". The 7x5" image is mounted on a 10x8" mat.
