A wonderful wealth of baseball history is represented by this April 22, 1955, check. All-time great Hall of Famer Ty Cobb wrote the check using his trademark green ink. Cobb is listed on the check as "Tyrus R. Cobb," and that is how he signed the draft. The check is made out to "Happy Chandler," whose given first name, which nobody used, was Albert. Chandler was the Baseball Commissioner who helped to facilitate Jackie Robinson's breaking of the "color line." He was also a United States Senator from Kentucky and also its governor. Cobb's signature is a Perfect 10/10. The collector wrote Chandler in 1986 when the collector obtained the check and asked him for what it was used. Chandler wrote back that it was a contribution check to Chandler's Gubernational campaign. Chandler added a handwritten comment: "By Ty Cobb. He was the best." Endorsed on back by Chandler's campaign chairman Bob Humphreys. PSA encapsulated.
