Terrific Ted Williams commemorative signed flannel Red Sox home jersey with "Health" patch. Wearing flannels could feel like playing inside a hothouse, especially when the Red Sox visited St. Louis in summer to play the Browns, but they looked gorgeous. The "Health Patches" were issued during 1942 to all Major League teams as part of the Hale America initiative. This was in response to America's entry into World War II after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, and it was designed to encourage fitness in case players and fans entered military service. Williams had a wonderful season in '41, hitting 36 home runs, knocking in 137, but losing 50 points on his batting average. However, since he hit a miraculous .406 in 1941 (still the last Major Leaguer to hit over .400), batting a mere .356 wasn't too shabby. Then Williams entered the U.S. Marine Corps as a pilot and lost the next three seasons to military service, often flying in combat.
