Ty Cobb was famous for his split grip of the bat, in which his hands are separated in order to give him more bat control for the place-hitting prominent in baseball in his early career. Here, a young lad, back when both ballplayers and young boys wore knickers, is trying the Cobb batting style with a bat that is almost his height. Like Cobb, he has the hands separated, and like Cobb, he is batting lefty. Cobb hated the swing from the heels approach of the long-ball era. Look carefully at where the bat is pointing: A Coca-Cola sign. Coke was invented in Cobb's Georgia, and the business savvy Detroit star was an early, and big, investor. Photo has a tiny spot, some pencil marks designed for cropping, and a couple of minor wrinkles. A good, clear photo of both Cobb and the boys of an era.
