The Horrors of War set from Gum, Inc. is considered one of the most popular and sought-after non-sport issues ever produced. The complete set at 288 cards is quite difficult to assemble; this lot of 205 different presents as over 70% of the set! Originally developed as a 240 card set about The Chinese-Japanese War, The Ethiopian War and The Spanish Civil War, the company added a second series of 48 cards illustrating the rise of Adolf Hitler, Nazi Germany and the beginnings of World War II. Many cards are violent with intense graphics depicting the ravages of conflict and war, with detailed text on the reverse. Card #1, "Marco Polo Bridge” is included in this lot and is centered, focused and in very pleasing VG/EX condition (often the subject of excessive wear). The final 36 cards in the set (high numbers #s 252-288) were not as actively collected during their initial release and as a result are considered much scarcer; this lot includes 23 of them. Overall condition stands at 21 cards in EX or better condition, with the remainder averaging GD/VG with some better and a few lesser.
