Babe Ruth postcard (3.5x5.5") with Hige no Tenpei. The headliner of 1934 Baseball All-Star tour of Japan was Babe Ruth. Even though the team was managed by Connie Mack and had numerous other future Hall of Famers, such as Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx, the Babe was The Man. He was at the tail end of his career, but the Japanese loved "Beibu Rusu," and Ruth was his usual gregarious self with his many fans. Sadly, in less than a decade, Japanese troops would yell, "To hell with Babe Ruth" as they attacked American soldiers, and one Japanese player who played against the Americans, pitcher Eiji Sawamura, was killed by American fighting men. But in '34 there was still hope for peace. Here, the Babe poses with two Japanese admirers. The gentleman to Babe's left is a famous chef nicknamed Hige no Tenpei. Babe loved his food, so could the nattily attired Ruth be doing a little pre-luncheon schmoozing with the day's chef? He'd probably be friendly anyway, but it couldn't hurt. Nice clear photo with clear resolution. (3.5) VG.
