Here’s a seldom seen complete set of 1952 Star-Cal Decals (Type 1), highlighted by twenty-three Hall of Fame players! This great set includes the likes of Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Stan Musial, Roy Campanella, and Jackie Robinson. We believe this to be only the second time a complete set of this early 50’s issue has been offered at public auction! Issued by the Meyercord Co. of Chicago in 1952, the Type 1 Star-Cal set consists of 68 different Major Leaguers each pictured on a large decal (4-1/8” x 6-1/8”) with a facsimile autograph below their image (Williams and Musial were so popular at the time that 2 decals were issued for each). All decals are in their original packaging envelopes, as issued. As a true highlight to this collection, the very rare checklist (also issued in a red windowed envelope) is included! When it comes to grading, Star-Cal Decals are naturally difficult to grade. This is especially so when they are in their original condition-sensitive red-bordered envelopes, as is the case with all examples included in this lot. The Star-Cal Decal can be in Excellent or better condition, but the flush-to-the-border red envelope framing the decal almost always shows wear, and if graded along with a near-perfect decal, naturally creates the issue of whether it is the decal or the red window envelope that is actually being graded. In this collection, all decals including the stars are in Excellent or better condition, with all red window envelopes showing typical modest edge and corner wear ranging from VG to EX. For the sake of accuracy, a few exceptions are noted: #70D light paper loss, decal background; 70G (Mantle) particularly clear and perfect decal; 71D color bleed on decal and background; 73B decal background slightly dirty with light color bleed, 73C some paper loss on decal, 73G (Fox) particularly clear and perfect decal; 74C light paper loss on decal; 76B decal, background slightly dirty; 77A (Ashburn) decal background slightly dirty; 77B (Kiner) particularly clear and perfect decal; 78A light color bleed on decal and background; 78E (Mays) light paper loss on decal; 79C (Campy) light residue on decal background; 79E (Snider) light color bleed on decal and background, some scuffing on facsimile autograph; 79G (Robinson) ½” clear vintage tape on decal edge, otherwise particularly clear and perfect decal; 80C ½” tear on left edge of envelope; 80G light color bleed right edge of panel background; 81D (Slaughter) light scuffing on decal and background; 81E (Musial) ¼” tear at bottom center of envelope, decal particularly nice and not affected in any way. As can easily be seen, Star-Cal Decals are an extremely attractive and colorful issue that includes a particularly high concentration of Hall of Famers. Here is an outstanding and seldom-seen complete set of this popular 1950s issue – including a factory-issued checklist! Total of 71 pieces.
