Three gorgeous prints published by Currier & Ives are presented as follows: 1) The Water Jump at Jerome Park, by Edwin Forbes. This is one of the extremely rare errors, and likely the most glaring inaccuracy, in a C & I original print. The print represents a race on November 6, 1877 and states that Deadhead won, with New York second. There were four horses in the race, and the one not shown, Coronet, actually won. The New York Times noted Coronet was in 3rd place as the horses went over the water hazard, far ahead of Dandy, who is shown as third. Both the Times and the New York Tribune of November 7, 1877 wrote that Coronet won. It is framed with the dimensions 19” L X 14 .5” W. 2) Harry Bassett by J. Cameron, 1871. The horse is racing right with jockey James Rowe who later became one of America’s most famous trainers. The framed print is 21” L X 18” W. 3) Freeland printed 1885. This iconic print features Isaac Murphy, the famed African American who was the “king” of 19th century jockeys. This exceptional hand-colored print shows Murphy atop Freeland. It is extremely valuable to collectors, and a similar specimen is in the Library of Congress. It is not framed and dimensions are 15 5/8” L x 11 7/8” W. All are in superb condition and in beautiful frames, except for Freeland which is unframed.
