Hard to believe, but this is the way many fans used to "watch" baseball back in the days of Cobb and Shoeless Joe. This archaic yet surprisingly sophisticated machine kept a running tally of the box scores for avid baseball fans, who gathered in the street outside the railroad station to watch it go. Similar specimens are seen in Ken Burns' "Baseball" documentary, perched in front of a herd of men, women and children, their necks craned toward the machine. Slips of vintage paper at left are printed with the teams' names, while nine canvas bands to the right (one per inning), printed with a series of digits, spin to correspond to the box score. The sheet is encased in a silver painted wood box with "National League" printed on top. Lightly restored to its former glory, though in unworking condition. An historic and visually impressive piece.
