Absolutely Fascinating pair of signed typewritten letters from Hall of Fame outfielder Max Carey in which Carey spills the beans about how he received both his NICKNAME and his PSEUDONYM LAST NAME! 1) Revealing 1958 missive to Frisz, in which Carey repeatedly refers to T.H. and T.H. B.B. (baseball) history. Since Carey played in the minor leagues in 1909 for South Bend, the T.H. undoubtedly refers to the Terre Haute Hottentots, another team in the league. Carey mentions how he got his nickname after "old Scoops Carey - named me after him." Carey states that he played his first game at T.H. on July 20, 1909 and "had to walk back to the bench to ask [the manager] what my name was, as I had asked him to use another name as I was still going to college. That's how Carnarius was shortened to Carey - and the name stuck." 2) Compelling 1958 typed and signed letter to Frisz. Carey references a November 12, 1958 article in the Sporting News that ranks him ahead of Ty Cobb, presumably as a base runner. Carey also states that "if they do the same thing about the top outfielder, they'll find I own most of the records in that also."
