Luis Santop, Hall of Fame catcher featured in a 1917 Brooklyn Royal Giants type III photo. The Royal Giants were an important black team, both an an independent squad and later as a Negro League team. This photo came from a player family scrapbook. (Provenance from the Mark Roberts Collection).
Santop, a powerful hitter,was known as "Big Bertha", for the German World War I artillery pieces of the same name. He hit .414, third that season among Negro team players in the East. Standing second from the left, Santop wears a jersey reading "World's Colored Champions".
