One of the nicest specimen we have ever offered. Moving mechanical figures top this roughly 2" x 9" cast iron bank, patented by James H. Bowen of Philadelphia and manufactured by J. & E. Stevens. Though it does bear imagery that today would be considered offensive, the cultural significance in the days of Donald Sterling and beyond makes them valuable to persons of all colors, shapes and sizes. The functioning spring-loaded, push-button coin bank features a pitcher, batter, and catcher engaging in a spirited game, all depicted in the classic Sambo stereotype. On the front, in raised, orange-painted lettering, "Dark-Town Battery" is written on the front of the base, with two crossed bats in between the words. This piece is in exceptional condition and has the highest paint percentage of any we have ever offered. Fresh to the market from a 30-year collection, it sports the fragile original bat which is normally undetectably replaced.
