Historically important pieces relate to the New Deal Theater and more: 1) 1936 Federal Theatre program of the Negro Unit presenting the Shakespearean play now known as "Voodoo Macbeth." Staged by Orson Welles on a Caribbean island with an all-black cast, this landmark theatrical event is famous for its innovative interpretation of the play, promoting African-American Theatre, and was the first step leading to the Mercury Theatre, War of the Worlds, Citizen Kane and troubled immortality. The only other program we found was a different version in the Library of Congress. 2-3) Two 1938 Mercury Theatre programs (Orson Welles direction) includes "Heartbreak House" with Welles as Captain Shotover and Julius Caesar with Joseph Cotton as Publius. 4-5) Two 1938 Labor Stage programs with "Pins & Needles." The December version with wonderful "Angels of Peace" cover showing Hitler & Mussolini satire. 6-7) 1930s Federal Theatre program of "The Popular Price Theater" presentation of "Help Yourself" with coming attractions insert. 8-9) Two issues of the Federal Theatre "Living Newspaper" (1938) which serve as Federal Theatre programs for "One-Third of a Nation." 10) 1930s Federal Theatre program for "Haiti" with interesting theater layout sketch on cover.
