Exceptional Sunday cartoon art by the inimitable creator of Popeye, E.C. Segar, dates from September 20, 1936. Constantly hungry and incessantly broke Wimpy is of course looking for free food. He borrows a hen from the Olive Oyl standard Mrs. Jones, convincing her he is a lonely man and wants the bird for company. Popeye is shocked that selfish Wimpy takes such good care of the hen when, in fact, his goal is to wait for her to lay an egg so he can have it, "sunny side up." Popeye is "disgustipated" when Wimpy coldly asks him to "Drop this old hen off at Mrs. Jones' house." Two panels have boxes cut out which can be restored. Some chipping on edges, taped corners and measures 20x21". One of the best examples we have seen as it displays many of the classic Popeye institutions all in one.
