Fabulous original cover art done by Nick Cardy for the DC Comics 100-Page Super Spectacular released in July 1973, #18 in the series. The Super Spectaculars were a "giant" comic produced by DC featuring only reprints initially, though new stories were included in later editions. The series was notable because until late '73 its issues contained no advertisements, and indeed on the cover offered here there is a box that reads "100 action packed pages of story and art from cover to cover." They made their debut in 1971, which was a transitional time at DC, when Julius Schwartz took the reins of the Superman legacy over from its previous steward, Mort Weisinger, who retired that year after nearly two decades of overseeing all Superman-related comics. The artist, Nick Cardy, was integral to DC at the time, having started with them in the 1950s and worked his way up through the organization to become their main cover artist in the early to mid-1970s. Cardy is best known for his work on Aquaman, the Teen Titans, as well as other major characters in the DC universe, and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2005. This cover of his features Superman front and center mimicking an Oscar statue, with crossed arms and a base that reads "35th Anniversary Special, 1938-1973," commemorating his addition to the DC lineup in '38. The main attraction of this particular issue was the reappearance of the Golden Age classic, "I Sustain the Wings!" in which Clark Kent enlists into military service, originally found in Superman #25, and the three-part epic, "The Strange Story of Superman Red and Superman Blue!" The comic also includes stories from TNT and Dan, The Atom, Captain Triumph, and The Hourman. This cover art is 100% original and is in EX condition. Comes with high grade copy and extra cover.
