Though Hal Chase is considered to be one of the premier defensive first basemen of all time, his reputation was forever tarnished by his penchant for fixing games in the early 20th century. To compound his misdeeds, Chase became embroiled in the most famous scandal of the era, the Black Sox fixing the World Series, when it was alleged that he acted as middleman between the players and gamblers.
