This sterling medal comes from one of the oldest and proudest traditions in all of sports: the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. First held in 1829, the Boat Race has become an iconic event in England and abroad. The rowing event pits the two prestigious institutions against one another on a 4.2 mile course along the Thames River in London, and has been held annually since 1856. This medal comes from the race's 57th edition in 1900, won by Cambridge. The front has two paddles and reads "CHAMPION 1900" on top with the letters "A, A, O" below surrounding a centerpiece "N" containing 23 diamonds. "R. Stoll, N.Y., Solid Gold" is stamped on the back, identifying an early maker of sports medals. There is an adjoining bar that reads "Senior Eight." The piece is NM-MT and is 25.9 grams of 14k gold.
