Here's the actual American flag that Richard E. Byrd flew with during his 1927 Trans-Atlantic flight. Byrd led one of the few crews that attempted the journey in an effort to win the Orteig Prize, which was to be awarded to the first person/team to fly from NY to Paris (or vice-versa). Byrd's plane crashed during a practice run and Charles Lindbergh won the prize while it was being repaired. In 1925, Army Air Service Reserve Corps Lieutenant Lindbergh had applied to serve as a pilot on Byrd's North Pole expedition but was too late. The 4x6" flag is in MINT condition and comes accompanied by signed letter by Byrd, dated June 19, 1928, on "Byrd Antarctic Expedition" letterhead. Handwritten excerpt on bottom in hand of Byrd notes, "This flag was carried alongside a piece of the original bunting of the first American flag which we gave to France." The letter is signed to Sam Katz, President of the Publix Theatres Corporation in Chicago, IL who owned a chain of motion picture theaters.
