A rare and hard-earned prize, this lot features Isaac Berger's 1956 Melbourne Olympic gold medal for weightlifting. As a featherweight (weighing about 130 pounds) for the USA, Berger won gold with a lift of 776.5 pounds. Born in Israel, Berger holds 23 world weightlifting records and was a 12-time United States National titleholder. In 1965, he was named to the United States Weightlifting Hall of Fame and in 1980, he was inducted to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. A three-time medalist, his 1964 Olympic record of 336 pounds in the jerk, at a body weight of 130 pounds, made him pound-for-pound the strongest man in the world. Obtained directly from Berger with signed LOA, also included is a special edition sheet of stamps in which the lifter was featured for "Famous People and Events of the Twentieth Century World Record Holders" alongside the likes of Jesse Owens, Boris Becker and Arthur Ashe. The medal reads "XVIth Olympiad Melbourne 1956" with "K.G Luke LTD" stamped on bottom and while 1956 medals did not come with ribbons, a piece was welded to the top of this medal for the ribbon to be attached. Shows minor wear but still a rare and gorgeous piece, measuring 2" in diameter.
