These 1972 Olympics in Munich were the largest yet, setting records in all categories, events (195) and participating nations (121). These games were to celebrate the peace but unfortunately, the peace was broken when 11 Israelis were massacred by a group of Palestinian terrorists. The medal offered here is a gold winner’s medal from that XX Olympiad. The gold medals were actually silver with gold plating. The IOC regulations stipulate that these medals are to have at least 6 grams of gold in them. As you can see, the gold plating and elevated image has been partially scraped off the front of the medal to reveal the silver underneath.
