An aura of tremendous Negro League history surrounds this photo, which comes from the family of Rube Foster and dates to the 1920s. It is the only known surviving image showing a Chicago American Giants game at Southside Park III and judging by the huge crowd, it could be from the World Series. Dating to the earliest days of the Negro National League, the fact that Foster retained this photo adds to the likely significance of the event. Southside Park III was used by the American Giants - owned by Foster - since their formation in 1911, through 1940, when the park was destroyed by fire. The photo has sustained damage as pieces are torn from the top corners and bottom middle, yet the central subjects - the packed house crowded intently around the game in progress - are only heightened by the vintage of this shot.
