One of the most important international saddles ever sold, this was donated by Australian sports legend, jockey Darby Munro. This came directly from Helms Hall, the esteemed Los Angeles Sports Museum, one of the first sports museums in the world. This comes with a Letter of Authenticity from Helms (now known as LA84 Foundation) on their stationery (shown here). It is also listed in the Helms inventory as number "HR.Q0050 Racing Saddle...Worn by 1944 Melbourne Cup winner, Sirius...1940s 20 x 8 x 8 in...Donated by Darby Munro (jockey)." Nicely worn and race used. Some damage to the attachment on the left side could be easily restored. Comes with letter of provenance and authenticity from Lelands.com guaranteeing its authenticity. Darby Munro remains one of Australia's great sports legends. Born into horse racing royalty by his Melbourne family, he is a member of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. He followed his brother Jim (who Darby beat in his first win) who also won a Melbourne Cup aboard Windbag in 1925. The controversial "Demon Darb" won three. The Darby Munro Stakes are still run annually at the Sydney Turf Club in his memory. Held continuously since 1861, the Melbourne Cup is Australia's top thoroughbred horse race, and stands as one of the richest turf races in the world.
