The only known cover of "Grant Johnson...Manager of the Philadelphia Giants,” this specimen is the September 1908 issue of "The Score" (translated), which doubles as a scorecard as well. Amazing piece has tears at edge as this likely came from a bound volume, otherwise real nice and clean. One of the true all-time Negro League greats, Johnson was soon after named to named to the Negro League All-Star team of sportswriter Harry Daniels of the “Freeman,” a legendary African American newspaper. This immortal 1909 “All-American” team boasted Johnson along with Rube Foster, Bruce Petway, Frank Duncan, Pop Lloyd and more; the team is a measuring stick of the early greats.
