Luther McCarty was a heavyweight boxer considered by most to be the greatest of all the "white hope" fighters who fought during the time of Jack Johnson. McCarty posted wins over Johnson opponents Moran, Flynn and Kaufmann and was on his way to a title shot when he suddenly died during his "tuneup" fight with Athur Pelkey in 1913; he was only 21 years old at his death. Noted Los Angeles boxing instructor DeWitt Van Court in 1926 called McCarty "unquestionably the greatest young heavyweight prospect since the days of John L. Sullivan." Offered here is a commemorative cane which was given to Luther McCarty on Christmas Day, 1912, by his manager Billy McCarney. At the top it is gold plated and inscribed, "World's Champion Heavyweight Luther McCarty Billy McCarney Mgr. 12-25-12." Minor wear at tip and minor wear at gold plate, measures 36" long. Exceptionally rare, the only artifact attributed to McCarty we have offered.
