There likely wasn’t much of a war room back in 1973 when the MLB draft was being performed. The Milwaukee Brewers held the 3rd overall pick and when they were apparently “on the clock” they had a big decision to make. Brewers General Manger Jim Wilson was likely the only soldier in the war room, and casually asked himself over and over again, "Do we take the kid shortstop outta California or do we take the sure thing college guy?” Looking back now, either choice would have been tremendous, but that decision to choose 17 year old Robin Yount over University of Minnesota’s Dave Winfield worked out well for the Brewers. Less than a year after being drafted, Yount was the 18 year old starting shortstop for the Brewers, eventually winning two American League MVPs and becoming a first ballot Hall of Famer. One year after his debut, the Topps Company featured Yount on his first mainstream card, #223 in the dual colored 1975 issue. The flush to the border design makes high grade examples very difficult to obtain, and with the Yount rookie having dark brown edges on half, perfect examples are darn near impossible. Whether it be from the choice of the brown and orange border colors by Topps, which never hide any corner touches, the clarity and focus of the depicted image, or the general nature of the factory centering, most of his rookie card specimens almost never obtain the highest possible grade.Except for this offered example. Graded and encapsulated by Sportscard Guaranty Corporation (SGC) at SGC 98 GEM MINT 10, this card embodies all perfection a card can have with four razor corners, great color, gloss and focus. Centering, of course, is superb and the overall “eye appeal” is tremendous. This is one tough card to get in perfect shape, and is one of only two examples graded at this tier by SGC with only three examples graded at the GEM MINT level by PSA. This is one of the true elite cards from the 1970s in the highest possible condition. Graded and encapsulated by SGC 98 GEM MINT 10.
