Commissioned for the entrance to the Gil Hodges Memorial Park, and as a tribute to the beloved Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodger, following his untimely death in 1972, this work is by celebrated artist William"Bill" Purdom, one of the most influential sports artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Purdom painted the character E.T., commissioned by Stephen Spielberg, for the whole world to see. You can find him on the pages and covers of Sports Illustrated, Time, and Newsweek, for the Baseball Hall of Fame and Topps Co. This piece is from the heart, created as a tribute to Hodges. A collage-on-board executed in mixed media, the vast majority is watercolor, minor amounts are in-painting, painting over printed material and integrated photography. This montage of images in a panoramic format, which is resonant in color and form; and appealing to the eye. The montage of legendary faces and historic events include all his contemporaries and "tell" the history of the Dodgers. It includes all who made the Brooklyn Dodgers legends; Campy, Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Pee Wee Reese, Duke Smith, Carl Erskine, Dixie Walker, Hilda Chester, Johnny Podres, Red Barber, Ralph Branca and others from the Dodgers, meant to look like actual pinbacks and baseball cards interspersed with photographs and prints but in actuality, all is original art executed by Purdom. This re-creates in paint Al Gionfriddo's catch from the 1947 World Series and Sandy Amoros' catch from 1955. Artist's annotations are written in pencil around the border, it measures 12x37" and is EX-MT.
