Despite being in the midst of the Great Depression and just months into opening its doors for the first time, Santa Anita Park rocked the racing world by creating the world’s richest horse race, The Santa Anita Handicap. Hollywood legends Bing Crosby, Al Jolson, Clark Gable and Mae West were among the record crowd to witness Azucar, a former steeplechaser, capture the “Hundred-Grander” and write the first chapter of the most prestigious handicap race in the country while defeating a field which included East coast stars Equipoise and Twenty Grand. This winning horseshoe was worn by Azucar in the inaugural 1935 Santa Anita Handicap. Set in an engraved hoof-shaped .925 sterling dish stamped Schofield Company, it maintains much of its original patina. An original time acme press photo of Azucar crossing the Santa Anita Handicap finish line is included.
